Sojourner Truth was a former slave who became an abolitionist and women's rights activist. She was born in Ulster, New York under the name Isabella Baumfree and was auctioned off at the age of nine. Her owners often abused her because they could not understand her Dutch accent. She was sold twice more where she married and had five children. In 1827, she escaped the custody of her owner along with her youngest child and worked in New York City. In 1843, she assumed the name for which she is famous for and began her career as an orator, which she saw as God's wish. She died on November 26, 1883.
