Beginning in 1994, Congress declared that every third Monday of the month of January would be the MLK Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. MLK, a central figure in the Civil Rights Movement of the Sixties, has been quoted as saying "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: what are you doing for others? "People all around the United States volunteer on the day to do projects that will help benefit their communities; the day of service "is a way to transform... [King's] life and teachings into community action that help solve social problems." -- MLK Day National Service website
