Description
Original drawing by John R. Murray of the first hospital site. Fragile condition.
The New York Hospital was chartered in 1771. The first building on Broadway was used from 1775-1870. The building was occupied by the British army during the revolutionary war. After the war the building was used as a home for destitute emigrants, anatomical lectures and the New York State legislature. The main building was opened for patients at that site in 1791 and the buildings were demolished in 1869. The second building was on W. 15th Street and 16th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. This hospital opened on March 16, 1877 and was used until 1932. While the hospital was being built the hospital operated the Chambers Street House of Relief. The New York Hospital Training School for Nurses was established in 1877. In 1912, an association was established with the Cornell University Medical College. In 1927, plans were made for building the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. The center which contained buildings for the New York Hospital and Cornell University Medical College opened for business at York Avenue between 68th and 70th Streets on September 1, 1932.
There are some variations. The same print was published with different captions. The captions variations include: "The New York Hospital in 1808"; The New York Hospital-Broadway, Opposite Pearl Street"; New York Hospital-Broadway, Opposite Pearl Street-Opened for Patients, January 3, 1791. There is also two variations of the print image. One variation shows two men walking (without a cane) and two women hugging each other and the boy standing next to them. Two people are in the sidewalk in front of the hospital and two animals in the yard. The other variation shows two men walking dress in black and one with a cane. Two women standing next to each other and one has hand on top of the boy's head. There are three animals in the yard and three figures on the sidewalk. Duplicates for all three variations available. Oversize negative transparcy in Box 6. The artist's name is printed recto. The Murray print was used in several Society of the New York Hospital annual reports. It first appeared in the 1893 report. John R. Murray was the board of governors from 1792-1808. This sketch was made showing the future plans of the hospital. The addition of the cupola and third story to the main building was made in 1804. The South Building was erected in 1808 as the insane asylum and later was used as the Marine Department. The North Building was not erected until 1841 so it would not have been there when this sketch was made. It was first published in the 1804 "Account of the New York Hospital." It is possible the print was added however at a later date.
